Michael Phelps took to Twitter to congratulate fellow U.S. swimmer Ryan Lochte on his gold-medal winning 400-meter individual medley.

Lochte responded later and thanked Phelps for providing help along the way.

The Phelps-Lochte matchup was one of the most anticipated showdowns of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, but Lochte turned it into a blowout quickly. He won the 400-meter individual medley in 4:05.18. Phelps, on the other hand, didn't even win a medal and finished fourth. It was the first time since the 2000 Sydney Games, when the 15-year-old Phelps qualified in just one event, didn't win a medal in an event. "This is my year," Lochte said afterward, sporting diamond-studded grillz in his mouth for the victory ceremony. "I know it and I feel it, because I've put in hard work. I've trained my butt off for four years ... and there's no better way to start this Olympics off than getting gold."
