Report: Phillies' Cliff Lee claimed on waivers by Dodgers, but deal unlikely

Turns out righthander Joe Blanton wasn't the only Philadelphia Phillies pitcher that the Los Angeles Dodgers claimed on waivers. Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that L.A. also submitted a claim for lefthander Cliff Lee, the former Cy Young Award winner.

The two sides have three days to try to work out a deal, but Heyman writes: "Phillies people have suggested to others they don't see a trade for Lee as very likely." If the teams don't come to an acceptable deal, Philadelphia can pull Lee off waivers, and he would remain in the City of Brotherly Love for the rest of the season.

Prior to the deadline the Phillies weren't offering to subsidize any of the $95 million remaining on Lee's deal through 2015, and they wanted a top prospect back. The claiming team obviously has to be willing to absorb the full contract -- which the Dodgers are -- as the Phillies theoretically could just send Lee to that team.
