Los Angeles Clippers point guard Chris Paul will be sidelined for the next eight weeks after the team announced on Tuesday that he underwent successful thumb surgery, according to a report from Chris Sheridan of SheridanHoops.com:

Chris Paul underwent surgery this morning to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb, the Los Angeles Clippers announced today, saying the injury occurred last month during Team USA training camp in Las Vegas, Nevada.

According to Sheridan, Paul can begin full-contract drills with the Clippers after his rehab period. He will definitely miss training camp and could miss the start of the regular season, which tips off Oct. 30. The Clippers' preseason begins Oct. 6 and the regular season starts on Halloween in a home game against the Memphis Grizzlies.

Paul ran the point for Team USA en route to a gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. He averaged 8.3 points, 5.1 assists and an Olympic tournament-leading 2.5 steals per game.  He also started all eight games for the team, averaging 25.8 minutes. Paul made headlines this offseason after turning down a contract extension with the Clippers. He is set to become a free agent July 2013.
