After signing on Aug. 17 to much fanfare amid hopes that he would revive the New England Patriots' return game, former Florida RB/Olympic sprinter Jeff Demps will not get a chance to do so until the 2013 season.
On Friday, the Patriots announced that they had placed Demps on injured reserve, ending his season just two weeks after he signed.
It's too early to know for sure, but either New England felt as if Demps was not yet ready to contribute in an NFL game -- understandable given his focus on track for most of the calendar year -- or the knee he tweaked in Wednesday's preseason finale is more serious than has been reported.
At any rate, Demps figures to be given every opportunity to win a roster spot next season, as he was signed to a three-year deal with $211,000 guaranteed
, the second-highest amount ever given to an undrafted free agent.
