Oakland A's pitcher Brandon McCarthy was discharged from the hospital Tuesday, less than a week after being struck in the head by a line drive off the bat of the Angels' Erick Aybar.

McCarthy underwent emergency brain surgery Wednesday night to repair a fractured skull and stop bleeding around his brain.

McCarthy and his wife, Amanda, broke the news via Twitter:
