Derek Jeter ankle surgery 'likely,' according to report

Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter is "likely" to have surgery on the broken left ankle he suffered in Game 1 of the ALCS, ESPN.com's Wallace Matthews reported Sunday night.

Jeter fractured his left ankle while diving for a ground ball up the middle in the 12th inning of the Yankees' 6-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers in Game 1 of the ALCS.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Sunday that Jeter had a CT scan and MRI, which both confirmed the break. He was spotted walking with crutches with his ankle in a splint. Jeter will travel to Charlotte, N.C., this week to see Dr. Robert Anderson, a foot and ankle specialist. Girardi said he is not sure if Jeter will travel with the Yankees to Detroit.

"When we spoke to the doctor originally, he said it's probably a three-month ordeal, but you have to have more tests,'' Girardi said prior to Game 2, according to ESPN. "Similar to anyone who breaks an ankle, you are going to have an MRI to see if there is ligament damage, if they need to do more than just cast it.'"
