The Golden State Warriors and point guard Stephen Curry reached an agreement on a contract extension Wednesday, reports the San Jose Mercury News.

The deal is for four years for $44 million and Curry is expected to sign the deal before the team's season opener Wednesday night in Phoenix. Curry would have become a restricted free agent at the end of the season if he and the Warriors did not come to an agreement.

"Excited I got it done. Now I can move forward and focus on basketball," Curry told Yahoo! Sports. "My ankle was a big factor with the number. They had to protect themselves a little bit."

Curry, 24, missed 40 of 66 games last season because of an ankle injury and averaged career lows of 14.7 points and 5.3 assists per game.
