Rex Ryan 'most overrated NFL coach' according to players poll

Rex Ryan has been voted the most overrated coach in the NFL, according to 103 active players in the league.

New York Jets v Pittsburgh Steelers

It's not Bill Belichick and it's not Andy Reid. The honor goes to Rex Ryan.

The players have spoken and the New York Jets' coach has been voted "the most overrated coach in the NFL," according to a poll conducted by Sporting News that surveyed 103 players from 27 teams in the league.

Though Belichick and Reid scored second and third, respectively, it was Ryan who was described by one AFC offensive player as having a coaching style "way over the top." The player went on to say that Ryan's reputation for acting out in front of the cameras is partly a function of his working in a media-saturated market like New York, but went on to explain that the record shows Ryan is not as good a coach as he's perhaps believed to be:

"I don't even know if you'd call him overrated anymore because it's gonna be a couple of years since he was in the AFC finals. He's pretty funny, and he's a pretty good coach. But not THAT good."

Ryan led the Jets to two AFC Championship Game appearances starting in 2009 in his first season as the head coach but fell well short of another appearance last season and seems headed for another disappointing season this year. He has also been famous for his bold predictions, guaranteeing the Jets will make the Super Bowl then failing to deliver.
