The Carolina Panthers have fired their special teams coordinator Brian Murphy, according to a report from the Charlotte Observer. The move come one day after the panthers allowed a 76-yard punt return for a touchdown in the team's 36-14 loss to the Denver Broncos. Murphy will be replaced with former assistant special team coordinator Richard Rogers.
The decision to fire Murphy was reportedly that of head coach Ron Rivera, though Panthers management supported the idea. “The biggest thing, more so than anything else, I look to see us improve in some of our production numbers,” Rivera told the Observer. “I told coach Rodgers what I wanted. I wanted things simplified. I wanted to come back to fundamental basics and that’s the direction we’re going to head right now.”
