Ben Roethlisberger's injury could 'kill him' if ribs press against aorta

While Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was expected to miss time with a shoulder injury, a rib injury he also suffered on Monday night against the Chiefs is currently of even greater concern.

The rib injury is "rare and dangerous," according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, and could potentially be life-threatening.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter Ed Bouchette described just how serious the problem is:

Roethlisberger said that on a scale of one to 10, the pain he is experiencing is at nine, according to NFL Network's Aditi Kinkhabwala. Ten-year veteran Byron Leftwich, who has posted a 57.9 quarterback rating over four seasons with the Steelers, will start in his place on Sunday night in Pittsburgh.
