As head coach at Arkansas State this season, Malzahn led the Red Wolves to a 9-3 record, a Sun Belt Conference championship and an upcoming appearance in the GoDaddy.com Bowl.

He served as Auburn's offensive coordinator from 2009-11, helping coach the Cam Newton-led Tigers to a national championship in 2010. Following that season, he received the Broyles Award as the top assistant coach in college football.

The Tigers had previously interviewed Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart, who along with Malzahn was one of six candidates for the position, according to a report earlier today.
