Nose tackle Josh Brent will not be allowed on the Cowboys' sideline the remainder of the season, team and league sources said Tuesday, according to an ESPN.com report.

Team and NFL officials were unaware that Brent would be on the sideline Sunday after being charged with intoxication manslaughter two weeks ago in the crash that killed teammate Jerry Brown. Both the team and the league have agreed that his presence was not appropriate, sources said.

Brent's appearance on the Cowboys' sideline drew wide criticism in the media. CBS NFL Today analyst Boomer Esiason called the sight of Brent standing alongside teammates "disgraceful" and the "worst" kind of example considering his legal issues

According to sources, Brent originally was reluctant to attend the game, but changed his mind at the urging of several teammates. His status on the non-football injury list allowed him access to the stadium and field.

Coach Jason Garrett, who didn't know Brent was at the stadium until pregame warmups, said Monday that Cowboys players were following the wishes of Brown's mother, Stacey Jackson.

“I didn’t know he was going to be there and I saw him prior to the start of the game and really that was a result of the wishes of Stacey Jackson, Jerry Brown’s mom, who stood before us at the memorial on Tuesday and really encouraged everybody and almost made a plea to everybody to keep Josh in our family and to keep him close and support him in every way that we can,” said Garrett.

Garrett said once Brent became aware that his presence was creating controversy, he left Cowboys Stadium in the third quarter.

Owner Jerry Jones didn't know Brent was on the team's sideline until he saw him on his stadium suite television.
