Report: Arizona Cardinals 'very close' to hiring Andy Reid as head coach

The Arizona Cardinals are "very close" to a deal with ex-Eagles coach Andy Reid to make him the team's next head coach, Tim Ring of KTVK-TV in Arizona is reporting.

Both Reid and Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt were fired on Monday. Reid went 129-88-1 in 14 seasons in Philadelphia, leading the Eagles to five NFC Championship games and one Super Bowl, while Whisenhunt compiled a 45-51 record in six seasons and also led the Cardinals to a Super Bowl loss.

Both teams lost 11 of their last 12 games this season, with the Eagles finishing at 4-12 and the Cardinals at 5-11.

The move would reunite Reid with quarterback Kevin Kolb, who he drafted in the second round in 2007 before trading him in 2011. Kolb has struggled in his two seasons in Arizona, playing just 15 games due to benchings and injuries.

According to Kenny Roda of ESPN 850 in Cleveland, Reid could also reunite with Tom Heckert, who served several roles in the Eagles front office from 2001-09 before becoming the Browns' general manager in 2010. Heckert was also fired on Monday.

The Cardinals are reportedly interviewing defensive coordinator Ray Horton for the position today, according to ProFootballTalk:

The Cardinals are believed to be interviewing their own defensive coordinator, Ray Horton, today. Horton is a minority, so that interview would satisfy the requirements of the Rooney Rule and leave the Cardinals free to make their hire. If they’re only interviewing Horton for that reason, then the Cardinals are violating the spirit of the Rooney Rule, but they wouldn’t be violating the letter of the rule and would therefore be in the clear with the league office.

A league source told ESPN.com's Adam Schefter that the Reid-to-the-Cardinals move has a 95 percent chance of happening:
