New Jacksonville GM: Tim Tebow won't be a Jaguar

Have the Jacksonville Jaguars already nixed acquiring hometown hero Tim Tebow?

In December, ESPN.com reported that it was a virtual certainty that Tebow would land in Jacksonville via trade or after he was released by the New York Jets following a 2012 season in which he created more headlines and rumors than touchdowns.

The Jaguars' struggle to sell out home games and Blaine Gabbert's less-than-stellar sophomore season as a starting quarterback topped the list of reasons why the franchise might be willing to take a chance on the former Heisman Trophy winner and Florida Gators Hall of Famer.

In January 2012, Jaguars owner Shad Khan even told reporters that -- given a do-over of the 2010 NFL Draft -- he would have traded down and drafted Tebow.

Or maybe not. In a press conference announcing his hire as general manager, David Caldwell said he could not imagine a scenario in which Tebow would become a Jaguar -- even if he's released. Caldwell had already made a big change in the Jaguars' 2013 makeup by firing head coach Mike Mularkey after one season.

Whether Caldwell intentionally closed the door on Tebow and the media sideshow that would certainly follow, or is being cautious discussing a player that remains under contract with the Jets remains to be seen.

Khan and Caldwell no doubt discussed Tebow's future -- or lack thereof -- in Jacksonville during the interview/hiring process.
