NFL mulls possibility of Super Bowl Saturday in 2014

The NFL is already developing a contingency plan for next year's Super Bowl, and it has nothing to do with how to deal with another 34-minute electrical blackout. Instead, the league might be looking at Super Bowl Saturday.

NFL officials are looking into possibly playing the big game on a Saturday or postponing it several days if the weather is too prohibitive, according to a report from Sports Business Daily. The 2014 Super Bowl is scheduled for Feb. 2 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey and will be the first Super Bowl ever to be held in an open-air stadium in the northeast.

The league is considering various options that include the possibility of delaying the contest several days in the event of a weather emergency on game day. The league even could decide to play the game on Saturday if faced with an ominous forecast, sources said.

Of course, the idea of delaying the game several days or announcing last-minute that it will be played a day earlier will present a host of travel complications for fans, many of whom typically arrive the day of the game and fly out later that night or a day later.

“The challenge I see is that the stadium is only so big and demand is far going to exceed availability,” said Dave Wintergrass, the NFL’s senior director of events.
