Surgery ends Jared Swopshire's Northwestern career

Northwestern starting forward Jared Swopshire will miss the rest of the 2012-13 season and has played his last game as a Wildcat after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on Tuesday, the school announced.

Swopshire, a sports administration graduate student who transferred from Louisville prior to the season, started all 24 Northwestern games before suffering the injury during the second half of Saturday's game at Iowa.

He ranks fifth in the Big Ten with 7.5 rebounds per contest in Big Ten play and his season average of 6.7 rebounds per game is the highest by a Northwestern player since Evan Eschmeyer averaged 10.1 per contest in the 1998-99 season.

"We all feel badly for Jared that he won't be able to play out the remainder of his final collegiate season," Northwestern head men's basketball coach Bill Carmody said. "He has been a terrific addition to the program, both on and off the court. He was enjoying a very productive year and was playing his most consistent basketball of the season when the injury occurred. There is every indication that he'll experience a full recovery."
