Alex Smith trade 'effectively complete,' according to report

The San Francisco 49ers have "effectively completed" a trade involving quarterback Alex Smith, CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reported on Sunday.

La Canfora reported that the 49ers have told inquiring teams that they have completed a trade, but it cannot be finalized until the league year officially begins on March 12.

The other team involved in the trade wasn't immediately clear. La Canfora speculated that the teams that make the most sense would be the Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars. Yahoo Sports' Jason Cole reported Saturday that the Chiefs were among the most active pursuers of Smith.

Smith was in the midst of the best season of his career before suffering a concussion on Nov. 11. Up to that point, he had a 104.1 passer rating and had guided the 49ers to a 6-2 record. But Colin Kaepernick dazzled the next week against Chicago, and head coach Jim Harbaugh made the decision to stick with Kaepernick thereafter.
