The Atlantic Coast Conference is expected to discuss the safety of fans storming the basketball court after upset victories and whether a penalty structure is warranted when the conference holds spring meetings in May, reports ESPN.com.

The latest court-storming incident came last night when unranked Virginia defeated third-ranked Duke 73-68 in Charlottesville.  Duke's losses on the road this season has caused fans to come onto the court at Miami, North Carolina State, Maryland and Virginia.

The Southeastern Conference came up with a penalty system in 2004 where the school is fined $5,000 for a first offense, $25,000 for a second, $50,000 for a third court-storming offense. The SEC is the only conference in the nation that has that rule.

"Look, do you know how close you are to -- just put yourself in the position of one of our players or coaches," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said, according to the Raleigh News & Observer. "I'm not saying any fan did this, but the potential is there all the time for a fan to just go up to you and say, 'Coach, you're a [expletive],' or push you or hit you. And what do you do? What if you did something? That would be the story. We deserve that type of protection."
