The St. Louis Cardinals announced Thursday morning that shortstop Rafael Furcal will undergo Tommy John surgery. According to a report from MLB.com, the recovery time will be six to eight months, so the NL All-Star will likely be out for the season.

Furcal, 35, had initially injured his right elbow in August and was hopeful that with a little rest, the ulnar collateral ligament would have time to heal. But an MRI revealed inflammation around the ligament last week and he was forced to stop all baseball activities in order to meet with doctors to discuss his options.
