Greg Jennings meets with Vikings hoping for $11 million annual contract

Free-agent wide receiver Greg Jennings and the Minnesota Vikings were set to meet on Thursday night, but no contract appears imminent because of Jennings' reported insistence on an exorbitant contract.

Tom Pelissero of the Twin Cities' ESPN 1500 reported on Thursday that Jennings was planning to have dinner with Vikings officials on Thursday night and then meet with executives at team headquarters on Friday. But there are no indications that Jennings has dropped his demands of a contract worth $11 million per season, which was where they stood at the opening of free agency on Tuesday.

The Vikings traded wide receiver Percy Harvin to the Seahawks on Monday and are searching for a new target for young quarterback Christian Ponder.

Pelissero reported that it might simply be a matter of time before Jennings' demands fall, since the wide receiver market is "cooling" and both Wes Welker and Danny Amendola have settled for contracts of around $6 million per season.

One NFL personnel man said even $8 million a year for Jennings might be "stretching it" unless he drops his price and more teams get into the bidding.

An executive for another NFL team said he could see a two- or three-year deal worth between $7 million and $8 million a year.

Jennings missed half of last season while battling a groin injury. He caught 36 passes for 366 yards and four touchdowns. A return to play with the Packers and superstar quarterback Aaron Rodgers is still possible -- general manager Ted Thompson said last month that he would like to keep Jennings in a Packer uniform. But Jennings’ reported contract demands could push him out of the Packers’ range.
