Report: James Madison’s leading scorer arrested, will miss first half of First Four game

James Madison's leading scorer, forward Rayshawn Goins, was arrested Sunday on charges of obstruction of justice and disorderly conduct, and will miss the first half of the Dukes' NCAA Tournament First Four game against Long Island University-Brooklyn, reports the Harrisonburg (Va.) Daily News-Record.

Goins was released on his own recognizance on a $2,500 unsecured bond, according to the report, and has a hearing scheduled for April 8. The arrest stemmed from an incident at a team party Saturday night.

James Madison, making its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 19 years, plays LIU-Brooklyn in Dayton, Ohio on Wednesday.

James Madison released a statement acknowledging the arrest but offering no comment on it or Goins' status for Wednesday's game.

“The athletic administration is aware of the situation,” James Madison officials said in a statement. ”We will not be providing any additional comments until we review this matter [Monday] morning.”

A Harrisonburg Police Department spokesman released a statement saying officers were called to a building at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday to help building security break up a “large party out of control."

Officers then tried to break up the crowd of more than 200 people, and a person identified as Goins “began yelling obscenities at the officers and enticing the crowd. He was told to leave several times by the officers."  Because the officers recognized the man, he was taken away by acquaintances and not arrested at the time. Police charged Goins a short time later.

Goins is averaging 12.7 points and 7.4 rebounds per game for James Madison this season, both marks the best on the team.
