Report: Cardinals, Adam Wainwright agree to 5-year, $97.5M extension

The St. Louis Cardinals and pitcher Adam Wainwright have agreed on a 5-year, $97.5 million extension through the 2018 season, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Wainwright, 31, is scheduled to earn $13 million in 2013, the final year of his current deal.

The righthander who finished 14-13 with a 3.94 ERA last season after missing all of 2011 recovering from Tommy John surgery, planned to postpone negotiations until after the season if a deal was not reached by Opening Day.

Wainwright is 80-48 with a 3.15 ERA overall in seven seasons in the majors. He's had a strong spring training going .4-1 with a 3.00 ERA, 18 strikeouts and six walks.
