The Tigers signed reliever Jose Valverde to a minor league deal. The news was first reported by ESPN's Patrick Reusse and later confirmed by the Tigers via Twitter. Valverde is a client of the Boras Corporation.

Valverde, 35, served as the Tigers' closer from 2010 to 2012. He posted a 3.78 ERA with 48 strikeouts and 27 walks in 69 innings last season.

The news came as somewhat of a surprise, as the team did not attempt to re-sign him after he struggled during the 2012 postseason. The right hander appeared in four games and gave up nine runs, all earned, in less than three innings. https://twitter.com/Buster_ESPN/status/319847889906069504
