Dzhokhar Tsarnaev charged with using a weapon of mass destruction

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has been charged for conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction against persons and property in the U.S. resulting in death, the Boston Globe reports. Tsarnaev was charged by a magistrate judge at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center on Monday.

According to a White House spokesman, Tsarnaev is set to be tried in federal court. U.S. citizens can't be tried before military commissions and since Tsarnaev was sworn in as a citizen in September, he must be tried in federal court. The Boston Globe reports that the charges may call for the death penalty.

“He will not be treated as an enemy combatant. We will process this terrorist through our system of justice,” spokesman Jay Carney said on Monday.
