Dodgers' Chad Billingsley to undergo Tommy John surgery, out 12 months

The Dodgers' starting rotation took another hit Tuesday. Pitcher Chad Billingsley will undergo Tommy John surgery on Wednesday and is expected to be out at least 12 months, the team announced.

He is the third Dodgers starting pitcher -- including Zack Greinke and Chris Capuano --  to go on the disabled list in the last nine days. Billingsley was placed on the 15-day disabled list with pain in his right elbow Sunday. He missed his scheduled Sunday start after feeling increased tightness and pain in his elbow in his last bullpen session, according to the team.

Billingsley has struggled with injuries, missing the final month of last season with a partially torn ligament in his throwing elbow. He received platelet-rich plasma injections and underwent rehabilitation, and experienced no pain during spring training. He began the 2013 season on the disabled list with a bruised finger, then went 1-0 with a 3.00 earned-run average in two starts.
