The San Diego Chargers selected Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o with the 38th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Te'o was the center of a media frenzy surrounding his fake girlfriend, Lennay Kekua, in January. Her alleged death and existence was later found to be a hoax.

The Chargers traded with Arizona to move up seven spots to move into position to take the Notre Dame linebacker.

Te'o had poor showings at the NFL Draft Combine, which dropped him out of the first round. The All-American linebacker had reportedly visited and worked out with the Miami Dolphins earlier in the month before being selected by the Chargers on Friday night.

The Chargers also selected offensive tackle D.J. Fluker from Alabama with their first round pick. Te'o joins a Chargers defense that allowed 21.9 points a game last season.
