Dolphins WR Mike Wallace backtracks from Jason Collins comment

NBA free agent Jason Collins came out in an exclusive Sports Illustrated article that appears in the May 6, 2013, issue, making Collins the first openly gay male athlete in a major American team sport.

"I'm a 34-year-old NBA center," Collins began in an essay in this week's magazine. "I'm black. And I'm gay."

And within minutes, Miami Dolphins wide receiver Mike Wallace felt the need to express his first amendment right to free speech and give his opinion on the situation.

"I'm not bashing anybody don't have anything against anyone I just don't understand it," Wallace tweeted Monday. "All these beautiful women in the world and guys wanna mess with other guys SMH..."

And within minutes of that post, Wallace did some necessary damage control, deleted the tweet and added:

Wallace signed a five-year, $60 million contract last month after spending his first four seasons in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“Mike Wallace has apologized for his comments, and we have addressed the matter with him. Mike’s comments do not reflect the views of the Miami Dolphins," the team said in a statement. "We believe in a culture of inclusiveness and respect, and any statements to the contrary are in no way acceptable to our organization. We will address the entire team about our policy of inclusion and make sure they all understand the importance of respecting individual choices.”
