Bloody result of Eric Gryba's hit on Lars Eller sparks controversy

A hit by Senators rookie defenseman Eric Gryba on Canadiens forward Lars Eller Thursday night resulted in a gory scene on the Bell Centre ice and a controversial cover of the Ottawa Sun.

The result of the hit left Eller bleeding profusely on the ice (see video below). After being removed on a stretcher, Eller spent the night in a hospital being treated for a concussion, facial fractures, dental fractures and facial contusions.

Gryba received a major penalty and a game misconduct for his check of Eller. Analysts were mixed on Twitter with some characterizing the hit as being clean, but with an unfortunate result. Others debated that hitting a vulnerable player regardless of the situation was no longer acceptable in the NHL.

Gryba could be looking at a suspension. CBC's Elliotte Friedman reported Gryba will have a hearing with the NHL on Friday.
