The San Francisco Giants have placed third baseman Pablo Sandoval on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left foot.

Manager Bruce Bochy said Sandoval did not suffer a fracture and could come off the DL when his 15 days are up.

Sandoval's seemingly constant struggle with his weight could be at the heart of his stint. Bochy said he will use his time to focus on losing weight. The Giants have reduced the Venezuelan's playing time as incentive to shed pounds in the past.

The Giants' slugger and 2012 World Series MVP is hitting .289/.326/.427 with eight home runs so far in 2013.

Joaquin Arias is expected to man third base while Sandoval is out of the lineup.
