Brewers' Ryan Braun will need more time on DL, may miss one month

Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun may need up to a month to heal a bruise and inflamed nerve near his right thumb, according to MLB.com beat writer Adam McClavy. Braun was placed on the 15-day disabled list on June 14 for the first time in his career. The team hoped the short break would be sufficient, but after a second opinion from hand specialist Don Sheridan, he will likely need more time (up to a month).

From the MLB.com report:

"It was nothing that we didn’t expect," Braun said. "What’s kind of nice is we get some clarity, at least. We have a better idea of, confirmation, of what we’re dealing with."

Braun had played through the injury for several weeks, but his lack of power was noticeable -- the former NL MVP was homerless in 65 plate appearances.

Manager Ron Roenicke was unsure about whether or not Braun would be placed on the DL for a longer stint. From the MLB.com report:

"We’ll see what happens at the end of this DL, and it sounds like he’s going to have to swing and see how it feels and see if we can cushion it enough to when he goes out there, we don’t go back to where he was when we went on the DL," manager Ron Roenicke said. Asked about the prospect of a longer stay on the DL, Roenicke said, "I can’t answer that until he really starts swinging and we see what’s going on. … I know he told me what [Sheridan] thought, and it could be longer, but we’ll have to see."
