The Los Angeles Angels have placed starting pitcher Jason Vargas on the disabled list with a blood clot in his left armpit area, the Angels announced on Friday. According to Los Angeles Times reporter Bill Shaikin, Vargas will seek a second opinion before considering surgery to remove the blood clot. The Angels have recalled Billy Buckner from Triple-A to replace Vargas in the rotation for the start on Saturday in Kansas City.

Vargas turned out one of his best performances of the season during his last start against the Seattle Mariners on June 17. Vargas struck out a season-high nine batters over seven innings while allowing two runs.

The 30-year-old lefthander is 6-4 with a 3.65 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP over 91.1 innings this season for the Angels.
