Carlos Marmol trade nearly complete between Cubs, Dodgers

The Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers are nearing an agreement on a trade that would send beleaguered relief pitcher Carlos Marmol to Los Angeles, ESPN.com's Bruce Levine reported Monday, citing two major-league sources.

Marmol could block a trade to the Dodgers under his limited no-trade clause. The Dodgers, Levine reported, are willing to eat at least some of the $5 million remaining in the last season of a three-year, $21 million contract.

After designating Marmol for assignment on June 25, the Cubs have until Friday to trade him or grant him his outright release.

Marmol has gotten off to his worst start as a reliever this season. In 31 appearances, he is 2-4 with a 5.86 ERA, 1.70 WHIP, and three blown saves. Marmol lost his job as the Cubs' closer during the first week of the 2013 season.
