The Portland Trail Blazers signed former Utah Jazz point guard Earl Watson for a one-year deal at the $1.4 million minimum, per CBSSports.com sources. Watson's agent Mark Bartelstein made the announcement Saturday.

Watson has known Blazers GM Neil Olshey since he was 17 years old, which influenced his decision, he said.

Watson missed the start of last season due to major knee surgery, then played through much of the season with a non-displaced fracture in his right leg.

Since becoming a free agent, there were reports in early June that Watson was being checked out by the New York Knicks, who were looking for a backup point guard.

Shortly after the announcement he would sign with Portland, Watson tweeted out a thank you to former Jazz coach Jerry Sloan and the fans, among others.
