Major League Baseball may try to cut a deal with New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez to reduce his looming drug suspension, reports the New York Daily News.

The report states that MLB is engaging in internal discussions about brokering a plea deal with Rodriguez. Last week, multiple media outlets reported that Rodriguez was facing a suspension, possibly after the All-Star Break.

Rodriguez met with investigators Friday and then reportedly skipped a rehab game for the Single-A Tampa Yankees.

MLB is investigating Rodriguez, Milwaukee Brewers leftfielder Ryan Braun and as many as 20 other players for allegedly receiving performance-enhancing drugs from the now closed anti-aging clinic Biogenesis and its founder, Anthony Bosch.

Rodriguez has said he used PEDs while with the Texas Rangers from 2001-03 but has denied using them since.

More from the Daily News:

According to another source, Rodriguez's meeting with MLB ended at about 4 p.m., and a clearly shaken Rodriguez then met with MLB Players Association reps for an hour and a half to discuss what had been outlined by MLB officials. When Rodriguez didn't show up at the Yankees' complex, GM Brian Cashman then tried to reach the three-time AL MVP, who told him that he “just couldn't make it.”

Meanwhile, an A-Rod spokesman told The News Saturday night in reference to a possible plea deal that “nobody from Alex's team has made any such comments, and as we have said before, we are respecting the process and following the procedures as outlined in the joint agreement.
