The Boston Red Sox have placed reliever Andrew Bailey on the disabled list with damage to his labrum and shoulder capsule, according to multiple reports. Surgery seems likely for Bailey and it is likely he will miss the remainder of the season.

Bailey, 29, has been on the disabled list five times in the last five seasons between stints with the Red Sox and the Oakland Athletics. Bailey was only able to make 19 appearances with the Red Sox last year after he was traded along with outfielder Ryan Sweeney from the Athletics in exchange for outfielder Josh Reddick and prospects.

Bailey was removed as the Red Sox closer earlier in the season after converting eight saves in 13 save opportunities. On the season, Bailey has a 3.77 ERA with 39 strikeouts in 28 2/3 innings.
