Derek Jeter's playing status has been day-to-day since he suffered a Grade 1 strain of his right quadriceps in his season debut last week. The injury has not improved and the Yankees placed their 39-year-old shortstop on the 15-day disabled list on Friday. MLBDailyDish's Chris Cotillo first reported the team's plans.

The Yankees will make Jeter's DL stay retroactive to July 12th, making him eligible to return on July 27.

Questions of whether the Yankees rushed Jeter back to action too soon were raised after he strained his quad while running out a ground ball in his first game back. The Yankees appeared to deviate from their usual approach to bringing back injured players.

JAFFE: Why the Yankees rushed Derek Jeter back ahead of schedule

With Travis Hafner and Brett Gardner both going down with foot injuries last week, the Yankees decided to bring Jeter back a day early without him having played a full nine innings in the field during his three-game rehab stint at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The team captain said it had no bearing on his latest injury and his ankle felt fine.

From the New York Times:

“I’ve been running all over the place the last three weeks,” he said of his rehabilitation work.

“I’m ready to go,” he said. “I want to play, and my ankle is fine.”
