Charges against North Carolina guard P.J. Hairston reportedly dismissed

All charges against North Carolina junior guard P.J. Hairston connected to his arrest in June have been dismissed, according to an InsideCarolina report that cites a Durham court clerk.

Hairston and his two passengers -- Miykael Faulcon and Carlos Sanford -- were arrested and charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession during a license checkpoint on June 5. Hairston was also charged with driving without a license. The charges were dismissed on July 19.

 According to court records, Hairston obtained and completed a drug assessment and the state decided not to proceed based on those actions.

Hairston was also able to provide his current driver's license.

According to the June 5 incident report, police seized a 9mm handgun, a magazine with nine rounds of ammunition and a plastic bag containing 41.1 grams of marijuana that were found outside of the car. On July 10, Durham Police Department spokesperson Kammie Michael said the department did not anticipate filing any additional charges in the case.

Hairston's arrest led to a USA Todayreport that the 2013 GMC Yukon he was driving was rented in the name of Haydn "Fats" Thomas of Durham from June 2 to June 5 for a cost of $1,261.64.

Thomas told USA Today he was not a North Carolina booster and was not connected with a sports agent.

"I don't know P.J. Hairston," Thomas told USA TODAY Sports. "I know Miykael, his friend. I don't know anyone at Carolina. I don't even like the Carolina team. Look at the age disparity between me and those boys. I could be their father."

USA Todayalso reported a May speeding ticket revealed Hairston was driving a 2012 Chevrolet Camaro rented under the name of Catinia Farrington listed at the same home address as Thomas.

North Carolina coach Roy Williams issued a statement regarding Harrison's incidents and the serious consequences he will face last Monday.

“PJ and I have had several discussions already and he knows he has made serious mistakes and there will be serious consequences as a result,” Williams said. “Certainly the idea of suspending PJ has been discussed. However, he is not currently enrolled in summer school, is not practicing with the team and we have no games until November. There are several options available in terms of discipline but we are going to wait until the process is complete to decide on those options.”
