Orioles complete deadline deal for Astros ace Bud Norris

The Baltimore Orioles acquired starting pitcher Bud Norris from the Houston Astros for outfielder L.J. Hoes, left-handed pitcher Josh Hader and a compensatory draft pick Wednesday, the Orioles announced.

Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports first reported the trade was agreed upon before finalization. The clubs finalized the deal just Wednesday's 4 p.m. deadline for non-waiver trades. More details on the players the Astros received from the Baltimore Sun:

Hoes had been promoted to the Orioles from Triple-A Norfolk last week. Hader, an Old Mill High School graduate, was drafted in the 19th round in 2012, but he quickly became one of the organization's most promising prospects.

Norris was 6-9 as the ace of the Astros' staff with a 3.63 ERA this year. The right-hander joins a Baltimore rotation currently occupied by Jason Hammel, Wei-Yin Chen, Miguel Gonzalez, Chris Tillman and Scott Feldman. At 59-48 the Orioles sit five games out in the AL East and hold a slim half-game margin over the Indians for the second wild card spot.

The deal comes on the heels of the Astros' trade of Justin Maxwell to Kansas City for pitcher Kyle Smith. The Astros have been active sellers in years past, dealing players like Hunter Pence in 2011 and both Chris Johnson and Carlos Lee in 2012.
