Major League Baseball is likely to make Monday the deadline for 14 players to accept suspensions in the Biogenesis case, according to an Associated Press report. That would allow players receiving shorter suspensions to be back for the postseason.

Alex Rodriguez is the biggest name linked to MLB's investigation of the former Miami clinic's distribution of banned performance-enhancing drugs. Rodriguez reportedly faces a lengthy suspension -- between 150 and 200 games if he accepts -- or a lifetime ban if he declines or seeks legal action.

According to the Associated Press:

Major League Baseball is prepared to issue two simultaneous announcements no later than Monday, a person familiar with the process told The Associated Press on Thursday. One would list players who accept suspensions; the other would name those disciplined without deals, but who could challenge penalties before an arbitrator.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no statements were authorized.

Other players, such as Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz could accept a 50-game suspension for a first-time offense, and be reinstated in time for the MLB playoffs. The Rangers would have exactly 50 scheduled games remaining before they play the Angels on Monday night. If he files a first-offender grievance the penalty would be delayed until after a decision by an arbitrator and risk his eligibility for the playoffs and the start of next season. Cruz is scheduled to be a free agent following this season.

Cruz said Thursday he hadn't made any decision about a possible appeal. Asked whether he was told specifically what penalty could be forthcoming, Cruz responded, "No, I cannot tell you. Sorry."
