Senior cornerback Antone Exum, who led Virginia Tech last season with five interceptions, will not play in the Aug. 31 season opener against No. 1 Alabama, the Hokies announced Monday.

Exum underwent offseason knee surgery and had hoped to be cleared for the start to Virginia Tech's fall camp. Head athletic trainer Mike Goforth said Exum's rehabilitation hasn't been as speedy as the Hokies had hoped and that Dr. James Andrews will re-examine the knee after six weeks.

Exum, an All-ACC second-team selection, tore his ACL, lateral and medial meniscus and fractured a bone in his right knee during a casual game of basketball in January.

Returning starter Kyle Fuller will man one of the cornerback spots, while Donaldven Manning and Brandon Facyson will vie for the other spot while Exum recovers.
