Given a 48-hour deadline to decide his future, Wayne Rooney has decided not to file a transfer request with Manchester United.

Chelsea boss José Mourinho, interested in adding Rooney, gave the 27-year-old forward until Wednesday to go public with his decision. Chelsea is now expected to pursue Samuel Eto'o.

Mourinho said after Chelsea's 0-0 match at Manchester United he was ready for the Rooney saga to be over:

We are not silly to try something if somebody didn't start it. So I think it is time for the good of everyone to finish the story. For one side, for the other side ...

... we are going to close another player if he is not coming ...

... it depends on this [Rooney's decision]. It depends on his reaction and his feelings. If now he doesn't want to leave, we are out of the thing. But we need to know. We need to know what is happening.

Rooney's relationship with Manchester United — mainly, former manager Sir Alex Ferguson — began to deteriorate after he was played out of position and kept on the bench for key games. Rooney has been with Manchester United since 2004.
