The Arizona Cardinals placed guard Jonathan Cooper on the season-ending injured reserve list with a broken left leg, ending his season, the team announced.

Cooper, who was picked seventh overall in April's NFL Draft, was blocking downfield early in the third quarter of last Saturday night's preseason game against the San Diego Chargers and collided with another player when he landed awkwardly and rolled.

Cooper underwent surgery the next day. Cardinals coach Bruce Arians initially said the prognosis for Cooper was for him to be sidelined 10 to 12 weeks.

"We don't want him to be a rookie next year," Arians said this week. "That was the big thing for losing him the whole season is he's a rookie again next year. Hopefully now that won't be the case."
