Three-time Pro Bowl cornerback Antoine Winfield will retire from the NFL after a 14-year career, according to Fox Sports' Jay Glazer.

The 36-year-old informed the Seattle Seahawks of his decision on the day the team was reportedly prepared to either trade or cut him.

Winfield signed a one-year, $2-million deal with the Seahawks this offseason after nine years in Minnesota and was expected to serve as the team's slot cornerback.

A former Buffalo Bills first-round pick in 1999, Winfield spent five seasons in Buffalo before signing with the Vikings as a free agent. He retires with 27 interceptions, 897 tackles, 7.5 sacks, 14 forced fumbles and four defensive touchdowns.

Seattle head coach Pete Carroll called Winfield a "consummate pro" in a tweet.
