Los Angeles Angels could drop 'of Anaheim' from name in new deal with city

The Anaheim City Council has agreed to give the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim sole control over their team name, which could allow the franchise to drop the "of Anaheim" suffix it has used since 2005, according to The Los Angeles Times' Bill Shaikin.

The naming rights are part of a larger deal that could keep the Angels in Anaheim through 2057. The city council is expected to vote Tuesday to enter lease negotiations with the club, according to the report.

Under the proposed deal, the Angels -- and not the city -- would pay for a major renovation of Angel Stadium. In return, Angels owner Arte Moreno would rent land surrounding the stadium for $1 per year and secure development rights to that land for at least 66 years.

The Angels can opt out of their stadium lease in 2016. The vote Tuesday would extend that opt-out window through 2019, giving the team and the city additional time to negotiate a complex deal.

Moreno was forced to change the team's name in 2005 in order to satisfy a lease provision mandating that Anaheim be included in the name.
