The 2020 Olympics will be held in Tokyo, the International Olympic Committee announced on Saturday. Tokyo was selected over finalist Istanbul and Madrid to host the 2020 summer games.
This will mark the second time Tokyo has hosted the Olympic games with the last time coming in 1964.
Madrid was eliminated earlier in the day in Saturday after the first round of voting was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Madrid was initially tied with Istanbul but a tiebreak was determined by the IOC. Istanbul won the vote over Madrid 49-45.
Istanbul has never hosted an Olympic Games despite five bids to the IOC. Tokyo's presentation made its case as the "safe pair of hands" while Istanbul campaigned as being the first predominately Muslim country to host the Olympics.
