Fab Melo to receive Mavericks' training camp invitation
Fab Melo, who was released by the Memphis Grizzlies this summer almost immediately after the team acquired him in a trade with the Boston Celtics, is now expected to head to Dallas for training camp with the Mavericks.
According to a tweet Tuesday afternoon from Marc Stein of ESPN, the Mavs will extend an invitation to the former Syracuse standout to attend training camp, which officially begins Oct. 1.
It's not clear how the team would add the seven-footer to the roster, as Dallas currently has the max of 15 players already signed to guaranteed contracts. The team bolstered its depleted frontcourt this summer with the addition of San Antonio Spurs forward-center DeJuan Blair and Milwaukee Bucks center Samuel Dalembert. The 23-year Melo has the potential to earn minutes in the NBA, as he showed promise by averaging 9.8 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.1 blocks last season in the NBDL.
If nothing but an invitation for now, the move could be an investment in the future for an aging team that's led by 35-year-old Dirk Nowitzki and is on the verge of entering into another rebuilding phase.
