Yankees: Derek Jeter to 'effectively' end season on disabled list

The Yankees are placing shortstop Derek Jeter on the disabled list, effectively ending his season, according to Yankees general manager Brian Cashman.

Injuries have limited the Yankees captain to just 17 games this season. His latest ailment has been soreness in his right ankle. Jeter started the season on the disabled list recovering from a leg fracture suffered in the American League Championship Series last October. He broke the same ankle during his rehabilitation. A subsequent CT scan of the ankle was negative.

On Wednesday, Yankees manager Joe Girardi described Jeter's status as being in a "holding pattern".

The Yankees have relied on Eduardo Nunez at shortstop since Jeter's last appearance on Friday. On Wednesday, the team acquired shortstop Brendan Ryan from the Mariners for a player to be named later.

Jeter has struggled in his brief time in the lineup, batting .190/.288/.254 with one home run and 7 RBI in 73 at-bats.
