The New York Yankees suffered another blow on Saturday when outfielder Alfonso Soriano was scratched from the lineup with a sprained right thumb, according to multiple reports.

Soriano sustained the injury while diving for a ball during the team's series in Baltimore earlier this week, Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported.

He went 1 for 4 while playing through the injury during the Yankees' 8-4 loss in Boston on Friday, but was replaced by Vernon Wells on Saturday.

The news comes the day after the team announced that outfielder Brett Gardner has an oblique strain that may force him to miss the rest of the season.

Acquired in a July 26 trade for Single-A pitcher Corey Black, Soriano has emerged as the Yankees' top right-handed power threat, with 15 home runs in 46 games since the deal.

The injury-plagued Yankees, who sat just two games back of the second AL Wild Cart spot entering play on Saturday, have used nine different players in left field and 10 different players in right field this season, according to ESPN's Buster Olney.
