New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said Mark Sanchez never won the QB competition between Sanchez and rookie Geno Smith, according to a NBC Sports report.

Sanchez said he won the competition with Smith and that his shoulder injury in the preseason is why he wasn't named as the starting quarterback. Ryan refuted Sanchez's claim.

“Well, I never said he won the competition. I didn’t say that,” Ryan said.

Ryan said if Sanchez believes he won the competition then that was Sanchez's own "opinion." Ryan hopes that Sanchez's shoulder rehabilitation goes well enough so Sanchez can be cleared to play this season.
