Report: Amare Stoudemire underwent knee surgery this summer

New York Knicks forward Amare Stoudemire underwent unreported, unannounced knee surgery over the summer, the New York Daily News' Frank Isola reported Sunday.

It is the third procedure he has undergone on his knees in the past year. Citing a Knicks source, Isola reported that the surgery was a "clean up" and is not considered major.

But considering Stoudemire's injury problems last year, it could mark signs of more trouble ahead this season. Last season, Stoudemire underwent two knee debridement surgeries — procedures to remove dead or damaged tissue or bone in order to heal the injured area. The first came in October on his right knee. In March, he had a second on his left knee.

Stoudemire didn't play until Jan. 1 last season, and he only played in 29 games under a strict minutes limit. He averaged 14.2 points and five rebounds per game, coming off the bench in all 29 games he played.

According to Isola, Stoudemire's injury problems led the Knicks to seek a trade for Andrea Bargnani. But they acquired Bargnani before Stoudemire's surgery in July.
